PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia State Police trooper sustained serious injuries Saturday after a car collided with a patrol vehicle on U.S. Highway 29.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 2:05 p.m. when a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser crashed into a patrol car that was assisting a disabled tractor-trailer on the southbound side of the highway. The impact forced the patrol vehicle into one of the troopers and subsequently into a second police vehicle.
The injured trooper was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, while the second trooper was unharmed.
Investigators reported that both patrol vehicles had their emergency lights activated and were partly positioned in the right travel lane to safeguard the disabled truck.
The driver of the Chrysler has been charged with reckless driving.
The crash is under investigation.
