JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — A Utah missionary was critically injured Tuesday morning after a driver struck her in a crosswalk, according to family members.
According to her aunt, Kelly Gribbin, Sister Addison Worwood and her missionary companion were crossing when the driver did not see Worwood.
Worwood remains in critical condition after multiple brain surgeries to relieve pressure and stop a brain bleed, according to a family update shared with KUTV.
Surgeons removed a portion of her skull to allow swelling, and another section was repaired with a titanium plate, family members said.
She also sustained facial and hip fractures requiring further treatment once her neurological condition improves. Doctors have reduced sedation; she moves her arms and legs but is not yet following commands, according to her mother.
Worwood is in the surgical intensive care unit on a ventilator. Her parents arrived in Tennessee on Wednesday and are with her, relatives said.
Authorities have not released information on the driver, potential citations, roadway closures, tows, or the status of the investigation.
