MAHOMET — An Urbana man died in a head-on collision on Illinois Route 47, just north of Mahomet, Thursday night.
According to the Champaign County Coroner, 29-year-old Lyle Owens was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana around 8:10 p.m. after the accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m.
Illinois State Police reported that Owens was driving southbound when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a semi-truck near East Oak Valley Road. Both vehicles were found in opposite ditches following the crash.
The driver of the semi-truck was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
An autopsy for Owens has been scheduled, and the crash remains under investigation.
