Eugene Bicycle Incident Claims Life of University Student
EUGENE, OR—A University of Oregon student was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on January 25 near the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Patterson Street.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Erick Munene Njue, was a Ph.D. candidate at the university. Authorities said the driver's name is currently withheld as the investigation continues.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after the incident, providing medical aid to Njue. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Witnesses reported the accident occurred just before 5:00 p.m., while Njue was riding in the bike lane.
The Lane County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation and has not yet released details regarding potential charges. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact their office.
