PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia State Police trooper sustained serious injuries Saturday after a vehicle collided with a patrol car on U.S. Highway 29.
At approximately 2:05 p.m., two troopers were assisting a disabled tractor-trailer on the southbound side of the highway when a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser struck the rear patrol vehicle. The force of the impact pushed the patrol car into one trooper and then into a second police vehicle.
The injured trooper was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment, while the second trooper did not sustain injuries.
According to authorities, both patrol vehicles had their emergency lights activated and were positioned partially in the right travel lane to provide protection for the disabled tractor-trailer.
The driver of the Chrysler has been charged with reckless driving. The incident remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
