CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa — A team bus carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team rolled over at the Jolley Curve on Highway 4 on [date], resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
Witnesses reported that a team van following closely stopped to assist, helping to extract players trapped inside the bus. “They were able to help get people out of the bus that were still inside,” said Richard Hall, Calhoun County's Emergency Management Coordinator.
First responders, including local emergency management, quickly enacted a mass-casualty response due to the high number of injured individuals. Hall noted that the swift actions of the players minimized further danger. “In a situation with a rollover, there's always a potential for gas or fuel leaking and a potential for a fire,” he stated.
Authorities called for additional resources, as the scale of the incident exceeded local capacity. “We need these available resources,” Hall said. Emergency coordinators established a unified command to manage patient care and transport.
Emergency crews transported three individuals by air and 29 by ground within an hour of the initial 911 call. More than 100 rescuers from approximately 40 agencies across five counties responded to the scene. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
