Serious injuries in head-on crash on Cape Cod

Wellfleet, MA — A on Route 6 left a Massachusetts high school senior and three others injured on Tuesday evening.

According to the Wellfleet Police, officers responded to the crash scene near Shepley Wood Products at approximately 5:45 p.m. A BMW sedan driven by 60-year-old Carlos Ibarguen of Eastham collided with an Audi sedan operated by 18-year-old Aiden Riggins of Orleans, a senior at Nauset High School.

Riggins and his passenger, 18-year-old Samantha Barrio of Wellfleet, were transported via medical helicopter to Boston hospitals in serious condition. Ibarguen was uninjured; however, a passenger in his vehicle, 73-year-old Robert Erickson of Eastham, was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the BMW crossed over double-yellow lines, resulting in the in the eastbound travel lane. Eastbound traffic was diverted around the crash site while emergency personnel responded.

Authorities stated that Ibarguen is facing charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violations, and operating outside of his license registration due to failure to wear glasses. A request to suspend his license has been submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
