MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old high school senior died Thursday morning in a crash near South Fork High School, according to the Martin County School District.
Authorities identified the victim as Christopher Brooks, a Hobe Sound resident, who was reportedly on his way to graduation practice when the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at Pratt Whitney Road and Bulldog Way.
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Brooks was traveling north when he failed to stop for traffic, rear-ending a dump truck at a red light. The impact was fatal, and Brooks died on the scene.
After colliding with the dump truck, Brooks' 2007 Honda Accord was pushed into the rear of a semi-truck. The drivers of both the dump truck and semi-truck did not sustain injuries.
Sheriff John Budensiek stated that witnesses, including a friend of Brooks, reported seeing smoke and rushed to the vehicle, highlighting the emotional trauma experienced by those involved.
Martin County School District Chief of Staff Jennifer DeShazo referred to the incident as an “unfathomable tragedy.” She confirmed that the graduation ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday would proceed as planned yet would “take on a much more somber tone.”
Brooks had been a lifelong student in the district, participating in the high school bowling team and the veterinary tech program. The district has arranged for counseling services throughout the day.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash.
