50-Year-Old Construction Worker Killed in Toms River Crash

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A 50-year-old worker died early Thursday after being struck by a vehicle on Lakewood Road and Raymond Avenue.

Authorities said police responded to the scene around 1 a.m. and found the man suffering from severe injuries. He was transported to Community Medical Center, where he was .

Investigators determined that a northbound vehicle hit the worker while he was on duty with a roadway construction crew. The driver, Douglas Smith, 51, of Toms River, has been charged with driving while intoxicated and . Smith was operating a white 2015 Chevrolet pickup at the time of the incident.

He was also taken to Community Medical Center, where a blood sample was collected for testing. Depending on the results, he may face additional criminal charges.

The investigation is ongoing, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
