50-Year-Old Construction Worker Killed in Toms River Crash
TOMS RIVER, NJ — A 50-year-old road construction worker died early Thursday after being struck by a vehicle on Lakewood Road and Raymond Avenue.
Authorities said police responded to the scene around 1 a.m. and found the man suffering from severe injuries. He was transported to Community Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that a northbound vehicle hit the worker while he was on duty with a roadway construction crew. The driver, Douglas Smith, 51, of Toms River, has been charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. Smith was operating a white 2015 Chevrolet pickup at the time of the incident.
He was also taken to Community Medical Center, where a blood sample was collected for testing. Depending on the results, he may face additional criminal charges.
The investigation is ongoing, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Authorities continue to urge caution for pedestrians on New Jersey roads, where fatalities occur frequently.
