Teen Pedestrian Struck and Killed by IndyGo Bus in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 14-year-old girl died Friday night after being hit by an IndyGo bus on North Post Road, police confirmed.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the incident at about 8:45 p.m. in the 3800 block of North Post Road, located north of East 38th Street. The area features gas stations, restaurants, and an IndyGo bus stop situated between two lanes.
Authorities reported that the victim, identified as Ikeria Jones, crossed the road midblock—a practice discouraged for pedestrians. IMPD officers found her critically injured, and she was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer indicated that the initial investigation suggests the girl ran into the side of the bus near the bus stop. The bus driver reportedly heard the impact but did not see the collision. Damage was noted on the side of the bus.
Investigators are seeking witnesses, including an individual who was with Jones before the incident, for further information. They emphasize that this person is not in trouble but may provide valuable context to the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Officer Eric Snow at 317-327-6549 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
In accordance with Indiana law, toxicological tests will be conducted on the bus driver as part of the investigation.
A spokesperson for IndyGo referred all comments to IMPD. IndyGo operates under a seven-member board appointed by city officials.
Indianapolis Public Schools issued a statement expressing their condolences regarding the loss of Ikeria Jones, stating, “Our hearts are with Ikeria's family, friends, and the entire school community.”
