CLARKSVILLE, TN—September 29, 2023— A school bus crash on Highway 48 claimed the lives of two students and left several others injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. near Kenwood Middle School. According to authorities, the bus, carrying 21 students, collided with an SUV heading southbound. Witnesses reported that the impact caused significant damage to both vehicles.
Emergency response teams from the Montgomery County Fire Department and Clarksville Police Department arrived on the scene shortly after the accident. Medical personnel transported five students to local hospitals, with two in critical condition. The two deceased students, both 12 years old, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that two individuals in the SUV sustained serious injuries and were also transported to the hospital. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
Highway 48 was closed for approximately three hours as officials conducted an investigation and cleared the wreckage. A tow truck was called to remove both vehicles from the scene.
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System is providing counseling for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
