BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A mother and her two daughters were killed early Sunday in a fiery wrong-way crash on southbound Highway 99.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the incident around 12:44 a.m. on August 16, north of 7th Standard Road. The collision involved a 2022 Honda Accord driven by 20-year-old Kylie Wetmore, a 2019 BMW 530i driven by a 44-year-old man, and a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado driven by a 41-year-old woman.
Authorities reported that all three occupants of the Honda, including Kylie Wetmore, 41-year-old Vanessa Sue Wetmore, and 16-year-old Kloie Wetmore, died at the scene. The BMW driver sustained severe injuries, while the two occupants of the Chevrolet incurred minor injuries.
The CHP is investigating which vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction. Preliminary reports indicate the Honda was engulfed in flames upon impact.
According to the Kern County Coroner's Office, the fatal victims were residents of Bakersfield. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the family during this tragic time, as they were returning home from a concert in Fresno.
CHP officials noted that it remains uncertain if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Traffic was impacted due to lane closures as investigations continue.
