BRAINERD, Minn. — The Minnesota State Patrol has launched a new Crash Foresight tool aimed at enhancing officer deployment based on accident prediction, officials announced.
According to Capt. Adam Fulton of the Brainerd State Patrol, this AI-driven tool analyzes previous crash data, trooper patrols, and traffic patterns to identify high-risk areas in real time. Initially implemented in Crow Wing County, the tool has since expanded statewide, with each of the 11 patrol districts now equipped to use it.
Fulton noted that both he and Katy Kressin, the Toward Zero Deaths program coordinator for west-central Minnesota, have presented the tool at national forums, garnering interest from other states. “No other state has combined data in this manner,” Kressin stated.
The tool not only offers predictive analytics but also automates citation processes, allowing troopers to upload data directly to the court system immediately after a traffic stop, streamlining procedures.
Fulton emphasized its effectiveness in targeting previously overlooked areas, citing one county road between state highways 71 and 371 that had seen a significant increase in DWI arrests. He remarked, “It gives us a concrete reason to focus on specific locations.”
The Minnesota State Patrol has historically collected crash data, but this innovative approach marks a shift towards proactive measures rather than solely retrospective analysis. According to Fulton, “It's pretty accurate and significant for our operations.”
