Massachusetts State Police Trooper Dies After Wrong-Way Crash on Route 1
A Massachusetts State Police trooper died Wednesday morning following a wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Saugus.
According to authorities, the collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. involving two vehicles. The trooper was identified as a 34-year-old male, who was responding to an emergency call when the crash happened. The second vehicle was driven by a 21-year-old male.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported the trooper to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured but is expected to survive.
Massachusetts State Police, along with local law enforcement, are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Route 1 was temporarily closed in both directions for several hours to facilitate the investigation and clean-up efforts.
Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the vehicles involved. Witnesses reported seeing the trooper's vehicle with significant damage.
Authorities said more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
