WOBURN, MA — A suspended Massachusetts State Police sergeant appeared in court Tuesday for a pretrial hearing related to a fatal crash that occurred on December 12, 2023.
Scott Quigley, 41, faces a charge of felony motor vehicle homicide in connection with the incident. Authorities allege he was driving under the influence when he collided with a van carrying 37-year-old Angelo Schettino, who succumbed to injuries from the crash on January 13, 2024.
The crash also resulted in injuries to the van's driver. Quigley, who was off-duty at the time, has been named as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit initiated by Schettino's estate.
According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, her office became aware of the allegations against Quigley only during jury selection for an unrelated murder case in Lowell District Court. The matter has since been referred to Suffolk County for further investigation.
The ongoing investigation includes scrutiny of the initial handling of the case by state police. Quigley's blood alcohol content was reportedly .11, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%. He received a warning for lane violations following the crash and has been on injury leave for eight months. He is currently suspended without pay.
Quigley's legal team has filed a motion to preserve any remaining blood evidence following his treatment at Lahey Hospital in Burlington on the night of the crash. His trial is scheduled to begin early next year, with the next court appearance set for August.
