WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (KUTV) — A rollover crash involving nine teenagers occurred near Cyprus High School on an unpaved road, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
The incident happened at approximately 2:41 p.m. near 4100 South 8400 West. West Valley Police reported that five teens, ages 15 to 17, were traveling east when they lost control of the vehicle, which rolled and collided with a rock pile. A 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other four teens suffered injuries and were transported for medical aid.
Authorities have indicated that speed may have played a role in the accident. “We believe that speed may have been involved, although this is a dirt road, and it wouldn't necessarily have to be a tremendous amount of speed to cause an accident like this,” stated Roxeanne Vainuku of the West Valley City Police Department.
Witnesses reported seeing emergency personnel respond swiftly to the scene. Neighbors voiced concerns about the road's condition and the absence of proper traffic measures. Local residents had previously expressed worries about speeding on this stretch, which was planned for paving last year, according to some community members.
The Granite School District announced that grief counselors will be available at the school on Wednesday to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. As of Tuesday night, authorities had not released the name of the deceased teen or updates on the injured individuals.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
