CHIPPEWA FALLS (WQOW) – Madalyn Zwiefelhofer reflects on the first responders who aided her recovery after a tragic accident on November 3, 2018.

While participating in a roadside clean-up with her Girl Scout troop, Zwiefelhofer, then 10 years old, was struck by a driver under the influence of huffing. The crash resulted in the deaths of Jayna Kelley, Autumn Helgeson, Haylee Hickle, and Hickle's mother, Sara Schneider. The driver is currently serving a 54-year prison sentence.

Zwiefelhofer sustained severe injuries, including two broken legs, and underwent open-heart surgery. She continues to experience chronic pain. “You're dealing with significant injuries; it really impacts your mental health,” she stated, highlighting her ongoing journey.

A memorial now stands along Highway P in Lake Hallie to honor the victims. Zwiefelhofer expressed gratitude for the community's support, stating, “It shows that people really do care.”

Graduating from Chippewa Falls High School this Friday, Zwiefelhofer remains active in Girl Scouts, despite the emotional challenges. She recently completed the EMT program at Chippewa Valley Technical College and plans to join the Chippewa Fire District. Inspired by the first responders who helped her, she aims to assist others in need.

“Life gets better. It does,” she said. “You just have to work for it.”

Madalyn and her classmates from Chippewa Falls High School will walk the stage on Friday night.
