TALLADEGA, AL – October 1, 2023 – The NASCAR Chase race at Talladega Superspeedway was halted under a red flag with five laps remaining following a significant crash involving multiple vehicles, including three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano.
Logano's No. 22 Ford went airborne and landed on its roof after losing control, triggering a 15-car pileup on the frontstretch. Other drivers involved included Chase Briscoe, Brad Keselowski, Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, and Riley Herbst. Authorities confirmed that safety crews required several minutes to flip Logano's vehicle back upright. He exited with assistance, receiving cheers from the crowd.
According to witnesses, Herbst's Toyota appeared to lose brakes prior to crashing into the inside wall at high speed. Both drivers were evaluated by safety personnel at the scene. Herbst, who had previously missed a race due to a concussion, was reported to have suffered minor injuries, including a soft cast on his left hand.
Logano expressed gratitude for the quick response of safety crews, stating, “I can't thank the safety crew enough. They did an amazing job.” NASCAR has recently implemented safety upgrades to minimize airborne crashes, and Logano noted the integrity of his vehicle after this incident.
Kyle Larson won the race after the crash was cleared, followed by William Byron in second and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in third. The next two races are scheduled for Martinsville Speedway on November 1 and Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 8.
