JAY COUNTY, IN (WISH) — A semi driver involved in a crash that killed four people was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Thursday, according to the White House.
Bekzhan Beishekeev, 30, of Philadelphia, was arrested after a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon on State Road 67, just west of the Ohio state line. Indiana State Police reported that his eastbound 2022 Freightliner semitractor-trailer struck a van after failing to stop for another semi. The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m.
Victims included Henry Eicher, 50; Menno Eicher, 25; Paul Eicher, 19; and Simon Girod, 23, all from Bryant, Indiana. Authorities confirmed all four died at the scene.
Investigators indicated that Beishekeev illegally entered the U.S. from Kyrgyzstan and was paroled using the CBP One app. He subsequently obtained a commercial driver's license in Pennsylvania.
ICE officials did not specify where Beishekeev is currently being held, and no dates have been set for his immigration proceedings. Indiana State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding lane closures or towing at the crash site. Jay County has approximately 20,100 residents and is located about 120 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
