A Newark man is dead and two others are injured following a crash on State Route 661 near Granville on Aug. 19, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:56 p.m. when a northbound Honda Civic veered off the road, then crossed into oncoming traffic. A southbound Jeep Wrangler attempted to swerve to avoid the Honda, but the two vehicles collided.
The Honda overturned, ejecting two occupants, while the Jeep hit a mailbox. William Coss, 46, of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 37-year-old Newark woman, also in the Honda, was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the identities of the occupants cannot be determined at this time, as they were both ejected. Investigators are collecting evidence from the Honda's interior to ascertain who was driving.
The driver of the Jeep, a 55-year-old Newark woman, was treated and released at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.
The highway remains under investigation, and further updates will follow as information becomes available.
