Bicyclist Killed in Collision on River Road in Eugene
EUGENE, OR — A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle on River Road on May 2. Authorities have identified the victim as 61-year-old David Winston Morris.
The Eugene Police Department closed both northbound and southbound lanes of River Road from Rosetta Avenue to Lindner Lane at approximately 9:15 a.m. following the incident. The roadway was reopened around 2:10 p.m.
Witnesses reported a local resident placing flowers near the crash site along a blue fence in Morris's memory on the afternoon of May 4. The speed limit in the area is 35 MPH, and the roadway includes a bike lane utilized by bicyclists commuting alongside vehicle traffic.
Better Eugene-Springfield Transportation, a local nonprofit advocating for transportation safety, announced plans to hold a press conference this week to address the crash and related safety issues.
During a February press conference, Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner emphasized ongoing concerns regarding traffic safety, citing frequent incidents involving drivers and pedestrians. “We continue to see bicyclists hit by vehicles,” Skinner remarked, highlighting the rising risks on the roadways.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, with the Eugene Police Department conducting inquiries to determine circumstances surrounding the collision.
