ROSEAU, Minn. (WKRC) – A woman allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic, causing a fatal crash on May 29, at approximately 4 p.m.
According to court documents obtained by the Minnesota Star-Tribune, 43-year-old Shauna Dokken was driving on the highway when she collided with an SUV driven by 82-year-old Barbara Lee Welburg, resulting in Welburg's death.
First responders noted that Dokken exhibited slurred speech despite not testing positive for alcohol. She informed authorities that she had taken multiple prescription medications earlier that day, including Adderall and lorazepam, according to KSTP.
Dokken sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. Welburg was pronounced dead at the scene after her vehicle rolled over due to the impact.
A witness reported swerving to avoid Dokken's vehicle, alleging that it seemed like the driver was intentionally maneuvering to hit him.
Dokken provided conflicting accounts of the incident, including a claim that her dog grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to spin out of control.
Law & Crime reported that Dokken was previously convicted of DWI in 2025 and was on probation at the time of the crash. She has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.
