MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A long-time deputy with the Martin County Sheriff's Office was killed in an off-duty crash early Wednesday morning in Okeechobee County.

Deputy Shawn Green, 46, a 25-year veteran, died at 3:02 a.m. on State Road 710, northwest of Southeast 59th Boulevard. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Green was driving a GMC Sierra pickup northbound when it crossed the center line and collided with a southbound semi-truck.

The impact caused Green's truck to catch fire, and he was partially . He was at the scene. The semi-driver, a 65-year-old man from South Bay, Florida, sustained injuries and was transported to Raulerson Hospital.

Green served in various roles within the sheriff's office, including road patrol, courthouse security, and corrections, and was a member of the Martin County Sheriff's Honor Guard. He is survived by a young daughter, parents, siblings, and a large extended family, both by blood and by badge.

“This heartbreaking loss leaves a void in our agency and community,” stated the Martin County Sheriff's Office. They encourage the public to keep Green's family in their thoughts as they mourn his passing.

In 2020, Green survived a severe accident while assisting others involved in a incident along State Road 714, according to WPTV. The crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
