Driver's Pursuit Leads to Semitruck Crash and Fuel Spill on I-70 in Clear Creek County
CLEAR CREEK, Colo. — A high-speed pursuit on Interstate 70 resulted in a semitruck crash and a significant diesel fuel spill Tuesday morning, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
The incident began at approximately 3:15 a.m. when the Idaho Springs Police Department issued a BOLO for a stolen Mitsubishi Endeavor. After the driver fled from police, authorities lost sight of the vehicle.
CSP reported that the suspect traveled westbound on I-70 in the eastbound lanes, prompting assistance from the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office (CCSO). During the pursuit, the stolen vehicle allegedly sideswiped a Toyota Camry, causing it to collide with a Kenworth semitruck. The impact ruptured the fuel tank on the trailer, releasing diesel onto the highway.
The driver of the Endeavor was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital out of precaution. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) closed the interstate near the Eisenhower Tunnel for cleanup and investigation. The roadway was reopened around 7:30 a.m.
