FOSTER, R.I. (WJAR) — A crash involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle blocked part of Route 101 near Route 94 on Thursday evening.

First responders reported one vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer, leaving the driver in critical condition. One lane was closed for several hours following the incident, which occurred around 5:20 p.m. Authorities have not confirmed the total number of vehicles involved or additional injuries.

This intersection has a history of accidents; according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), over 20 crashes have occurred since 2020, with at least 12 injuries reported in the last three months. In April, seven people were injured in a separate incident at the same location.

Foster Police Chief Tyler Domingos stated that recent incidents prompted the installation of larger stop signs and flashing lights. A traffic light is planned for future installation.

Local business owner Paul Oueidat, who has advocated for a traffic light, expressed concern over the increasing frequency of accidents. He noted that vehicles approaching from Route 94 often fail to stop, creating dangerous conditions.

Witnesses reported that increasing traffic flow in the area has not been matched by improvements to the intersection's layout. Harold Shippee, a lifelong resident, emphasized the need for more patience among drivers.

RIDOT confirmed a Traffic Commission study on the intersection was underway, with design and installation of a traffic light expected to begin next year.
