ARGYLE, Wis. — A traffic collision on Highway 81 claimed the life of a 79-year-old man from California on Thursday afternoon. Daniel L. Smith, a resident of El Cajon, was behind the wheel of a 1957 Bel Air when the incident occurred around 6:17 p.m. in Lafayette County.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, Smith was driving west on Highway 81 when his vehicle veered into the north ditch. It then crossed the roadway, entered the south ditch, and ultimately rolled over, coming to a stop on its roof.

Emergency personnel pronounced Smith dead at the scene, as confirmed by the Lafayette County Coroner's Office. An 85-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and received treatment on-site before being released.

The Bel Air sustained extensive damage and was later towed from the location. Authorities indicated that speed and a failure to maintain control of the vehicle likely played a role in the tragic crash.

Assistance at the scene was provided by Argyle Fire and EMS, Lafayette EMS, and the Lafayette County Coroner's Office.
