Brockton Community Holds Vigil Following Fatal Cape Verde Bus Crash
Brockton, MA — Community members gathered Monday evening to mourn the loss of 25 individuals in a bus crash in Cape Verde over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed that most victims were teenagers. The crash occurred on Saturday evening, prompting an outpouring of grief in Brockton, which has a significant Cape Verdean population.
Mayor Moises Rodrigues, a native of Cape Verde, stated, “The tragedy of this past Saturday evening came as a real shocker to all of us in this community.” He noted receiving numerous inquiries from residents, including non-Cape Verdeans, seeking ways to assist.
Claudil Gomes, a member of the Brockton School Committee, emphasized the need for unity, saying, “I believe an incident similar to what just happened in Cape Verde, regardless of where it happened, should be something that brings people together.”
The vigil highlighted the community's solidarity during this difficult time. Emergency services from local organizations provided support at the event, with many attendees offering prayers for the victims and their families.
