MANCHESTER, NH — Seven people, including a minor, were hospitalized following a serious multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 293 on Wednesday morning.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation reported the incident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. on I-293 northbound at Exit 2. The crash involved seven vehicles, with a box truck ending up in the Merrimack River. All northbound lanes were closed, while traffic was directed to the left shoulder.
Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Eric Dubowek confirmed a total of eleven patients were treated at the scene, with seven transported to local hospitals. New Hampshire State Police stated that none of the injuries were life-threatening; however, a minor passenger sustained serious injuries.
The crash damaged several guardrails on the bridge, necessitating its temporary closure. The 26-year-old box truck driver was uninjured and was found on the truck awaiting rescue.
Emergency crews, including a dive team, are working to recover the submerged truck, with plans to use a crane for its extraction. Significant traffic delays persist in the area, and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to authorities. Deputy Chief Dubowek remarked on the incident's severity, noting it was unprecedented in his 21 years of service.
