WASHINGTON (7News) — A passenger was killed in a two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday morning, and one driver was arrested after fleeing the scene.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, according to the United States Park Police (USPP).
Authorities said the driver of the suspected vehicle fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers. The suspect was then transferred to USPP custody.
One driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a passenger in that vehicle was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased's body was taken by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The USPP Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the initial investigation and crash reconstruction. After consulting with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, USPP is managing the crash investigation and related arrest.
The suspect remains in custody, with charges pending coordination with the U.S. Attorney's Office, authorities confirmed.
Road closures associated with the investigation have been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened. The investigation remains ongoing.
