Lede: New Jersey State Police released body camera footage related to the investigation into the deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, following a tragic crash on August 29, 2024.
Authorities said Sean Higgins, 44, is charged with aggravated manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide among other charges in connection with the incident. He has been in custody since the night of the crash and is currently awaiting trial.
Higgins reportedly rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a 35-year prison sentence. He is now challenging the admissibility of evidence, including statements made to police. A hearing regarding this motion is scheduled for September 18.
Both brothers were cycling when they were struck by Higgins' vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police reports. Witnesses noted Higgins was driving aggressively prior to the collision. His blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.087, surpassing the legal limit.
The Gaudreau family has established a foundation to honor their sons and support youth hockey initiatives. The Columbus Blue Jackets have paid tribute to Johnny Gaudreau throughout the 2024-2025 season, including raising a banner in his honor.
A trial date has not been set, pending resolution of the evidentiary motions.
