HOBE SOUND, Fla. — A crash on Sea Branch Boulevard near U.S. 1 late Saturday resulted in one death and critical injuries to a passenger, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the 20-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, which struck a tree and caught fire. The driver was transported to a hospital, where he died from injuries early Sunday morning.

The 20-year-old passenger escaped the vehicle with the assistance of a bystander and was to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, where she remains in intensive care.

Excessive speed is suspected as a contributing factor to the crash, though the names of those involved have not been released.

This incident marks the third death of a young person on local roadways within two days, prompting deputies to urge all drivers, especially younger motorists, to exercise caution and drive attentively, particularly during nighttime hours.
