Denver Police Launch Online Driver Exchange Program for Minor Accidents
DENVER, CO – October 5, 2023 – The Denver Police Department (DPD) introduced a new online Driver Exchange platform on Thursday to streamline information exchange after minor accidents.
The platform is intended for use when collisions do not result in injuries, particularly during weather-related “crash alerts.” Officers will still respond if a vehicle is disabled or if drivers lack proper documentation or are suspected of impairment, according to DPD.
“This program is being implemented to better serve the community, allowing drivers to go about their days instead of waiting for an officer,” said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas. This initiative aims to enhance officer availability for urgent calls.
How the Driver Exchange Program Works
- After a minor collision, one driver should call 911 or 720-913-2000.
- If both drivers agree, dispatch will text a link to begin an online report.
- Each driver completes their details on a secure site, with options to redact personal information.
- Photos of the accident and vehicle damage can be uploaded.
- A completed driver exchange report link will be provided for sharing with insurance companies.
- Drivers are then free to leave the scene.
Although accessible year-round, the program is particularly advantageous during adverse weather, which raises accident rates. The service is provided at no cost to the city by Carfax for Police, which is utilized by over 6,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide.
Privacy advocates have expressed concerns regarding the potential commercialization of driver data under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act.
