CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WJAR) — Two individuals died in a serious crash on Interstate 295 north in Cumberland on Thursday, according to Mayor Jeffrey Mutter.
The incident, which involved at least two vehicles, occurred near the exit for Mendon Road at approximately 3:30 p.m. The crash blocked all travel lanes on I-295 north for several hours during evening rush hour.
Witnesses reported that one vehicle was on its side, and smoke was seen coming from the wreckage. Emergency responders were on the scene, providing medical aid and directing traffic.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced at 6:38 p.m. that the crash scene was cleared. Traffic on the southbound side was slow as investigators assessed the situation. Northbound drivers were permitted to turn around to avoid the backup.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
