GREEN RIVER — A significant crash on Interstate 80 in the westbound tunnel near mile marker 90.2, which occurred at 11:37 a.m. on Friday, has resulted in three confirmed fatalities. The Wyoming Highway Patrol completed data collection at the scene and indicated they do not anticipate further casualties from this incident.
Col. Tim Cameron, the top official of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, expressed condolences for those lost in the collision. “Our hearts are heavy with the loss of these three individuals, and we mourn with their loved ones,” he stated in a news release on Monday. Information about the deceased will be provided when available, and families are being asked for privacy during this difficult time.
The crash involved a total of 26 vehicles, consisting of 10 passenger vehicles and 16 commercial vehicles. Among them, six commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles were completely destroyed by the ensuing fire within the 1,200-foot tunnel.
An off-duty trooper was present during the event but sustained no injuries. This trooper actively assisted in the evacuation of the tunnel and is regarded as a witness, remaining unavailable for interviews.
Following the incident, WHP is working diligently to digitally reconstruct the crash using the evidence obtained. Efforts to prepare the eastbound tunnel for head-to-head traffic are also underway, with DeBernardi Construction setting up concrete barriers. Traffic will be regulated at a speed limit of 35 mph through the affected area, and some delays are expected.
WYDOT officials anticipate that preparations for the head-to-head traffic flow will be completed by Wednesday. “With reduced speeds and additional signage, we see this as a safe solution to minimize traffic impacts to the community of Green River,” noted John Eddins, WYDOT District 3 engineer.
Travelers on I-80 should adhere to all posted speed limits and be aware of restrictions within the eastbound tunnel. Westbound traffic is currently being diverted at mile marker 91, while eastbound traffic is rerouted at mile marker 89.
Governor Mark Gordon and WYDOT Director Darin Westby visited the crash site for a briefing with local emergency response teams and WHP. Gordon acknowledged the collective effort needed in addressing the incident and emphasized the importance of driver attentiveness. He also recognized the strain the temporary detour places on the community.
In a show of support, the governor pledged to mobilize resources for the communities impacted by this tragedy and extended his gratitude to all involved agencies.
