CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Two people were killed, and multiple others were injured in a collision involving a vehicle and a group of cyclists on US Highway 19E at Simerly Creek on Wednesday morning.
Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley confirmed that two individuals died at the scene, with additional victims receiving medical attention. At least one person has been airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center. Ballad Health reported that seven victims have been treated, with some in serious condition.
Authorities identified the deceased as Milligan University sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers. The university expressed deep sorrow regarding the tragedy, urging support for the affected families and community. Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine noted that members of the Milligan Cycling Team were involved in the incident.
According to emergency responders, injuries vary among the cyclists, and multiple individuals are receiving care in surgical intensive care units. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and Carter County 911 has advised drivers to avoid the area as cleanup continues.
Charges have been filed against 69-year-old John Benfield from North Carolina, including two counts of vehicle homicide and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, according to District Attorney Steve Finney. He is currently held at the Carter County Detention Center, where additional charges may be forthcoming.
