Plane Crash Near Louisville Airport Leaves Multiple Casualties

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (TNND) — A UPS MD-11 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time, leading to several injuries and fatalities.

Authorities confirmed at least seven people have died, with 11 others injured, some suffering “very significant” injuries, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Four of the deceased were not on the aircraft.

The crash occurred near Fern Valley and Grade Lane, sending black smoke and flames into the sky. Videos from local news outlets captured the scene. Emergency crews are currently on-site, with Mayor Craig Greenberg stating the plane was carrying 280,000 gallons of fuel.

A shelter-in-place order is in effect for a five-mile radius around the airport, as officials caution residents to turn off air intake systems. The Louisville Metro Police Department is urging people to avoid the area while the situation remains hazardous.

UPS reported it has been notified of the incident, stating there were three crew members on board but did not confirm injuries or fatalities. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation, with a team set to arrive in Kentucky on Wednesday.

Flights at the airport have been suspended and are not expected to resume until Wednesday morning.

The scene is still active, according to Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey, who advised the public to stay away until authorities declare the area safe.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
