GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 70 killed one driver and injured six others on Monday morning.
The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near milepost 4 in Mesa County, close to the Utah state line. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), a Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a Ford F-150.
The impact caused the Subaru to roll down an embankment and ignite, said CSP. The driver of the Subaru, a 32-year-old woman from Colorado Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ford F-150 driver, a 40-year-old man from Thornton, and five passengers, including two young girls aged 13 and 10, were transported to various hospitals with serious injuries.
The CSP's Vehicular Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident. The Mesa County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the deceased once next-of-kin notifications are completed.
The crash prompted the closure of the interstate for several hours, affecting traffic flow in both directions.
