Newport, ME— A New Hampshire man was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer late Tuesday night on Interstate 95.

Juan Guallpa, 33, of Lempster, New Hampshire, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Volt northbound near mile marker 157 when he stopped in the travel lane around 11:36 p.m., according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety. A 2021 Freightliner subsequently struck Guallpa’s vehicle from behind, pushing it into the median.

The tractor-trailer overturned onto its passenger side and came to rest across both southbound lanes. Guallpa died at the scene, Moss confirmed Wednesday morning. The driver of the Freightliner sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield.

Authorities have not determined the reason Guallpa was stopped in the northbound lane. The collision prompted the closure of I-95 in both directions. Northbound lanes reopened at 3 a.m.; however, southbound traffic remained reduced to one lane as of Wednesday morning.

The cleanup operation is expected to take approximately eight hours.
