Fort Worth, TX — October 12, 2023 — A jury is set to determine the sentence for De Aujulee Evans, who pleaded guilty to intoxicated manslaughter leading to the death of Sgt. Billy Randolph during a crash on I-35W in August 2024.

According to authorities, Randolph was working at the scene of a separate accident when Evans drove the wrong way and struck him. She later abandoned her vehicle and fled the scene. Evans also pleaded true to aggravated assault for hitting Randolph.

Prosecutors indicated the potential punishment could range from probation to life in prison. Emotional testimonies from fellow officers in court portrayed Randolph as a beloved mentor and leader. Officer Taylor Massey recounted the moment he witnessed the collision, describing Randolph’s critical condition as he lay on the ground.

Dash and body camera footage presented to jurors captured the chaotic aftermath, showing officers rushing to assist Randolph before transporting him to the hospital. Footage depicted Massey performing CPR while urging Randolph to stay conscious.

Emotional reactions were evident in the courtroom, particularly from Randolph’s family, as they viewed footage of his final moments. Massey expressed the profound loss felt within the police force, stating, “It’s like losing my dad.”

Evans also displayed emotion during the trial, with jurors watching video from her police interrogation. She admitted to consuming over 10 tequila shots prior to the incident and confessed to panicking after the crash.

The sentencing phase is expected to continue, with prosecutors set to call additional witnesses through Monday. Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia attended to show support for Randolph’s family.
