MONROE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A deadly crash occurred Wednesday afternoon just southwest of I-69, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a Subaru driven by 48-year-old James Caudell of Bloomington crossed the centerline on South Rockport Road at West Stansifer Court, colliding head-on with a southbound Kia driven by 74-year-old Theadora Wellman, also of Bloomington.
In the aftermath, a third vehicle, a Toyota, was damaged after hitting debris from the initial collision. Wellman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of death is under investigation by Monroe County Coroner Jeff Hall.
Caudell was initially hospitalized for medical treatment and subsequently arrested upon his release on March 1. He consented to a chemical test, with toxicology results pending.
Emergency responders transported the drivers of the other two vehicles and a 7-year-old passenger in the Subaru to area hospitals. The child sustained serious injuries but has since been released. The Toyota driver was treated for minor injuries and released the same night.
Authorities have not specified any lane closures due to the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
